We started early from Te-Anau along the Southern Scenic Road heading towards Invercargill.
Along the way the scenery was again stunning. By now, I must have repeated this line hundreds of time, but bear with me. It is truly beautiful. We saw the mountain range towards the Sound. Went passed an old suspension bridge built 1899, no longer in use before. This was before Tutapere.
We carried along the coastal route following the Waiau River. It is a big river coming all the way from Te-Anau to the sea. We passed Riverton, supposed to be the oldest town in the South Island. It was old and deserted. More like abundant. Stopped for a cup of coffee and tried to buy some fresh fish. But nothing open till lunch time.
Invercargill – very Scottish. It was the first landing place by the Scot from England. This is a big town. In the past it was a roaring port. Lots of old engineering works now deserted. We took a drive up to the lookout point. The view of the harbour from the top was fascinating. Stopped for lunch at the Bluff.
Carried on the scenic route towards Owaka. This is called the Catlins. Landscape is a bit like Scotland (UK), except more hills and the hills are rounded. Like the home of the hobbits in Lord of the Ring.
We stopped by Curio Bay to see a Petrified Forest and giant sea kelp. Large area of forest below water, turning to rock over time. The kelp looked like truck tires. They are big. My mum was surprised at its size. My sister in law said we should take some home as it is expensive to buy in Singapore.
We then went to Niagara Fall NZ of course! The fall was a flat one. I supposed if you increased its elevation, it would be Niagara Fall USA/ Canada. The women of the past used to bring their wool here to wait for the boat so the wool can be sold in the market.
We arrived at Owaka about 5 pm. We stayed at Pounakawea for the night. We were the only camper van. The campsite was not a Top Ten.
